Mr-Glass Window Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
We install and replace Mr-Glass windows throughout Fresno, with most full-frame window installations running $850 to $1,900 per opening depending on size, glass package, and frame condition. Most installs are completed in a single day, and we keep common Mr-Glass hardware, balances, and weatherstripping on the truck. The typical call starts the same way: a window that won’t stay up, a sash that binds in the frame, or a draft that started small in November and now cuts through the living room every afternoon when the valley wind picks up.
Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To
Mr-Glass windows in Fresno fall into two broad groups: earlier single-hung aluminum frames and the newer vinyl horizontal sliders and picture-window combinations. The aluminum units, most common in homes built between 1985 and 2005, use a channel balance system with a block-and-tackle mechanism that wears out after 15 to 20 years of Central Valley heat cycles. The vinyl lines use a simpler constant-force coil balance, and while they fail less often, the rollers and locking cam tracks do wear.
Before you order anything, check the corner of the fixed panel or the head of the operable sash for an etched label or a small foil sticker. Mr-Glass etches the glass with a four-digit code on most units; if that’s gone, measure the visible glass width and height to the nearest 1/8 inch, then measure the frame depth where the sash sits. That frame depth is the compatibility gotcha: some Mr-Glass sliders use a 3-1/4 inch frame pocket, not the more common 3 inch, and an aftermarket balance for the wrong depth will bind within a week. For hardware and balances, we spec OEM where the part is still available. For glass packs and weatherstripping, quality aftermarket equivalents from our other stocked lines (PGT, CGI, and CWS) often match or exceed the original spec at 20 to 30 percent less.
One note for the record: Meridian Windows and Doors Fresno is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Mr-Glass the manufacturer. We’re authorized to install and replace their products, and we stock the parts to do it right.
Signs Your Mr-Glass Window Installation Is Failing
- The sash won’t stay up and creeps shut on its own. This is the block-and-tackle balance giving out. The internal spring has lost tension, usually after years of expansion and contraction in summer heat. It won’t recover on its own.
- The sash lifts fine but binds halfway up the track. The roller or glider at the bottom corner has flattened on one side. Fresno dust gets into the track, grinds against the nylon wheel, and within a season or two you’re fighting the frame every time you open it.
- Air moves around the sash when the window is closed and locked. Weatherstripping has compressed or cracked. The original felt or vinyl bulb on aluminum frames hardens in direct sun; once it loses its spring, the seal is gone.
- Condensation builds between the glass panes in the morning. The thermal seal has failed. Low-E coatings and argon fills don’t fail, but the seal around them does, and once moisture is inside the insulated glass unit, replacement is the fix, not cleaning.
- The lock or keeper doesn’t engage, or engages loosely. The sash has settled out of square, which is usually a sign the frame itself shifted, or the cam-style lock has worn its teeth. Either way, the window isn’t doing its job as a secure barrier.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Full-frame Mr-Glass window installation in Fresno runs $850 to $1,900 per opening. A straight glass pack replacement on an otherwise sound frame runs $380 to $650. Here’s the breakdown:
- Glass pack replacement: $380 to $650 installed, including new insulated glass, fresh glazing bead, and a clean-and-lube of the existing tracks.
- Single-hung full replacement: $850 to $1,400 installed, including the new window, full frame removal and new construction, insulation, trim, and exterior caulk.
- Slider or picture window full replacement: $1,100 to $1,900 depending on width and glass package (clear, low-E, or low-E with argon).
Every quote is written before the job starts. The price goes on paper, and it does not move at the door. That’s how Elliot Vance has run crews his whole career: measure twice, install once, write it down. Labor is covered in writing for 365 days under the Done Right Promise, and if the installation fails within that year, we come back at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can check safely: run a dollar bill along the weatherstripping while the window is closed and note where it slides through easily; look for cracked glazing bead or loose screws in the frame corners; note whether the sash sits even in the track or tilts to one side. Those observations help us diagnose over the phone.
Replacing an insulated glass pack on a Mr-Glass unit is not a hand-tool job. The sash has to be removed, the glass pack pulled without twisting the frame, and the whole assembly set square on reinstall or the window binds in six months. Channel balances on older aluminum frames carry tension even when the sash is out. If you release a block-and-tackle assembly wrong, you can hurt yourself. If your Mr-Glass window is failing, call us at (559) 272-4716 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether it’s a repair or a replacement, and a written price either way.
FAQs
The aluminum single-hung units typically give 15 to 20 years before the balances or seals fail; the vinyl sliders and picture windows commonly last 20 to 25 years with regular track cleaning. Fresno’s triple-digit summers shorten the thermal seal life on any insulated glass, Mr-Glass included.
In many cases, yes. A failed balance, a worn roller, or cracked weatherstripping is a repair job for $180 to $380 depending on the part. A failed thermal seal between panes, or a badly racked frame, usually means replacement. We’ll tell you which one applies to your window before we quote anything.
Most single-window installations are done in one day, start to finish, including trim and exterior caulk. A full-house replacement of 10 to 12 windows typically runs two to three days. We’ll give you the timeline in writing when we quote.
We stock common Mr-Glass balances, rollers, locks, and weatherstripping on the truck for same-day repairs. Glass packs and full units are custom-ordered to your measurements and usually arrive within 7 to 14 days. Call (559) 272-4716 for a free estimate and we’ll confirm availability for your specific model before you spend a dollar.
